What am I fighting For? And why you're here.

Let's face it, no matter how old you are at some point you've been to an arcade, and you've probably been to that one corner with a bunch of arcade cabinets that look something like this:

Fighting games are a universal constant at this point, and as years pass, even as arcade culture dies down, they only grow more and more popular as time goes by. And whether the game came out just last year or released before the turn of the millennium, there is always something to talk about, no matter the game. Welcome to Corner Carry Central, where the mystery of, "What makes fighting games cool?" is uncovered, and where someone whose last fighting game exposure was Street Fighter 2 at an arcade in 1994, or who just booted up Street Fighter 6 for the first time, can learn something about this spectacular form of competition.

My name is Kelland, and as someone who has been heavily invested with fighting games since BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II on the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, I've been in the game for a while now. As a result, I want to be able to share that joy with everyone, whether they're just getting into fighting games, or if they're a seasoned veteran. This will be a page where I post all kinds of content related to fighting games: Be it Tournament/community news, thoughts on recent games, and deep-dives into fighting games beyond the competitive side, like the lore and characters that make the game. My goal is to make a blog that will be a one-stop spot to show everyone that there are plenty of ways to get invested in a fighting game.

Now how did I get here? Well, I played in a lot of local Super Smash Bros. Tournaments back in 2015-2018, and then shortly after found out through plenty of Youtube content that other fighting games I played also had tournaments, thanks to content creators like Maximillian Dood. Since then, I've been going to tournaments for a ton of different games: mainly BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Granblue, and Under Night (In fact, I went to Combo Breaker 2024 and made it onto the live stream setup for this game in particular, link to that with the timestamp here). It is largely a hobby, but something I love doing and something I've got a lot of drive in to succeed. So I hope I can show everyone why I feel that way through this.

  1. I'm glad I found this blog as I am also a big fan of the Blazblue and Guilty Gear games although I mostly enjoy the soundtracks. I like the depth that you will cover these games because I can certainly agree that there are more to games then just visuals and having fun. I am interested in the coverage of both retro and modern games and how they have changed over time. I will be looking forward to your next post and learn more about these games.

  2. Gaming tournaments and fighting games have always fascinated me a little bit. It's such a strong testament to the popularity that gaming has garnered over the years, to the point that it can be a professional sport! I found out about tournaments in 2018, and it was kind of mind-blowing to me. What are your thoughts on fighting games transforming and keeping an ear open for fan commentary and how tournaments react to their games? For example, the banning of Meta Knight in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or Nintendo's stronger efforts in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to maintain a more perfected yet delicate character balance?
